This news comes after Pfizer and Biontech had announced earlier a vaccine which it says has a 90% effective rate. The Chief Executive Officer of Moderna, Stephane Bancel said that, “This positive interim analysis from our Phase 3 study has given us the first clinical validation that our vaccine can prevent Covid-19 disease including severe disease.”
The Director General of World Health Organisation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had commended the discovery but still advised caution as he reiterated that that vaccines alone will not end the pandemic. He says, “We continue to receive encouraging news about Covid- 19 vaccines and remain cautiously optimistic about the potential for new tools to start to arrive in the coming months.”
However, Tedros also advised against treating the pandemic with kid’s gloves and warned countries against complacency. Similarly, United States of America President elect, Joe Biden emphasised that despite the development of vaccines, social distancing and wearing of masks should still be in use.
This revelation comes at a critical time especially when countries have begun to see an increase in the rate of new infected cases. This surge has consequently made it necessary for these countries to implement another round of lockdown.
European countries like Greece, Sweden, Austria, Germany, and some states in the US have all had an increase in the number of newly infected cases. The United States recorded 1 million new cases with over 200 deaths, while Canada recorded over 300 new infections this week with 11,000 deaths.
