The artiste, from a total of five nominations in different categories, won four of the awards – Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration and Best Southern Africa, all for his hit song ‘Jerusalema’, making him the biggest winner of this year’s edition.
The hit song, ‘Jerusalema’ , featuring Nomcebo was initially released in 2019 but later included in Master KG’s second album and released in January 2020.
After its release, the song rose to global fame, went viral on music platforms and social media and even had its own Jerusalem Challenge hashtag.
A remix of the song featuring Nigeria’s Afrobeat sensation, Burna Boy was released in June 2020.
With over 230 million views on YouTube, the song has had impressive chart performance in different countries and achieved Platinum and Gold certificates.
It would be recalled that Master KG also won the award for the Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) on November 8 making him the third South African to win the award.
He beat the likes of Maphorisa, Rema, Kabza de Small, Burna Boy, Sheebah, and Gaz Mawete.
Other awards Master KG won include Best Africa Song at the Muzikol Music Award (MUMA) 2020 and Musician of the year at the Feathers Awards.
The 7th edition of the AFRIMA award which is the biggest African music award ceremony in Diaspora was held virtually with performances from Cape Verde’s Soraia Ramos, Fally Ipupa, Rema, Gaz Mawete, Poco Lee, Eddy Kenzo, Nadia Nakai and Master KG.
