Nigerian Communications Commission Awards N650m Research Grants To 11 Universities

The Nigerian Communications Commission has awarded N650 million grants to 11 universities across the country to enable them to carry out research and proffer solutions to the challenges in the telecommunication industry.
The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Professor Umar Danbatta, who presented the grants to the beneficiaries yesterday in Abuja, noted that the commission instituted the grant in recognition of the role of academics in the development of the telecommunications sector.
Danbatta added that the academics provide knowledge resource and research results that facilitate innovations in the industry and other sectors.
The vice chairman noted that tertiary institutions submitted detailed out proposals to the commission on the innovative use of telecommunications to resolve national problems stressing that the commission received a total of 63 research proposals, while 11 met the set criteria after stringent evaluation.
Also speaking, the Director of Research and Development at NCC, Ephraim Nwokonneya said the IVT sector was dynamic, knowledge, innovation and research-driven, explaining that virtually all the equipment and technologies currently in use were products of research and innovations carried out outside the country.
