Andrew Marbell, a nutritionist, said the African star apple, popularly known as Agbalumo in Yoruba or Udara in Igbo, can lower blood sugar, cholesterol and help prevent heart diseases.

Speaking in an interview with NAN on Thursday, Marbell said the fruit contains more Vitamin C than an orange.

Marbell disclosed this in an interview with the NAN on Thursday in Abuja.

“This vitamin helps in preventing sore throat, constipation and toothache,” he said.

“In some parts of Nigeria, the seed is used in treating skin infections and it is believed that consuming it can help fight some cancers and diabetes.”

He said that agbalumo serves as a natural source of antioxidants to remove free radicals from oxidative stress disorders.

According to the nutritionist, the fruit could help one to lose weight because it contributes about three grams of fibre to the recommended daily intake of 25 to 38 grams.

“Fibre provides bulk to your diet, a factor which can make your abdomen fuller for long periods.

“The different parts like the roots, bark and leaves are used for cough, yellow fever, high blood pressure and much more.

“It also contains such useful element as phosphorus, calcium, iron, dietary, fibre and protein.”

He also prescribed the fruit for pregnant women because it provides a lot of energy and is rich in moisture.
