When the news broke recently that a Nigerian student, Dr. Chidubem Obi Gerald, had graduated from Sechenov University in Russia with a 5.00 grade point average(gpa), it may not have struck a chord in the minds of many readers that Chidubem had actually emerged among the best of the best graduating medical students globally, but that is the simple implication.

According to a recent World Health Organisation’s directory, Russian medical schools are among the best in the world. And Sechenov is among Russia’s very best medical schools.
As if following the culture of Harvard, Sechenov University is committed to recruiting the best students from across the globe. So, for Chidubem, gaining admission into such a prestigious school was carving a niche for himself. Sechenov is not a school for the average students.
The first Moscow State Medical University (Sechenov University) is the top medical university in Russia. Its history began in 1758 as the medical faculty at Imperial Moscow University.
And in line with modernity, Sechenov has become an internationally recognized comprehensive academic research platform integrating the world’s advanced developments aimed at personalized life-long health management and overcoming global health challenges.
The University`s research-intensive environment supports collaboration between students, faculty, and partners in creating new products and technologies.
Currently Sechenov University is the only member of the Russian Academic Excellence Project in QS World University Ranking by Subject (Medicine). The university’s clinical competence is a key advantage for cross-disciplinary basic research and discovery of new horizons in health and care.
As for Chidubem, graduating with the highest possible score from Sechenov University and winning multiple awards, including one from the president of the Russian Federation, although an uncommon feat, is no surprise, considering his pedigree.
Before going to Sechenov, he was the best graduating student from his high school days. Later, he received a scholarship from the federal government of Nigeria to study abroad. He chose Sechenov University because of its reputation as the leading medical school in Russia. Gerald says that, in his opinion, one of the most challenging tasks was to learn Russian, as it is the official language of instruction, but he mastered it.
Make no mistakes, Chidubem is a world class material that has distinguished himself among the very best of the best.
