MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) returns after four year hiatus

On February 20, 2021, the capital city of Kampala, Uganda will be the host city of the award show which will be held in a re-imagined virtual format for broadcast to the rest of the world.

The announcement was made via a virtual press conference broadcast that had in attendance the Senior Vice President and General Managers at ViacomCBS Network Africa (VCNA), Monde Twala and Craig Paterson as well as Godfrey Kiwanda and Lily Ajarova who are the state Minister for Tourism at Ugandan Ministry of Tourism and Chief Executive Oficer m for Ugandan Tourism Board respectively.

The award which prides itself in celebrating and recognising the heroics of musical talents across the continent has now added more categories to its nomination list – Best Lusophone and Best Francophone to reward Portuguese and French speaking countries. 

Others are Best Fan Base, Alone Together Best Lockdown Performance, Personality of the Year and MAMA Generation Change Award.

However, qualification criteria to be part of the nominees is for musical projects from October 1st 2019 to October 1st 2020 for the 2021 edition.

Winners would emerge through vote casting by fans after the nomination list is announced in December 2020.

MAMA debuted in 2008 and ran for three consecutive years till 2010, followed by a three year time skip to return in 2014 to 2016 and another four year hiatus.
