From the moment Winfrey declared they were giving Rapalalani away in marriage, the rain of tears drizzled and boxes of tissues followed. This occurred on Saturday at the Villa Christina in Brookhaven, Georgia, where the couple promised to love each other always.

Earlier on, the groom, Austin Nelson had predicted he might cry when the time came to marry Rapalalani. Just as he had predicted, he did cry, alongside many others.

Oprah and Rapalalani met when Rapalalani was a student of the Winfrey’s Girls’ School in South Africa, which opened in January 2007. She was among the first set of girls to graduate from the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in the small town of Henley on Klip, Johannesburg, South Africa. Winfrey started the school to give girls with deprived backgrounds from the town of Henley access to quality education.

Rapalalani was later transferred to SCAD in 2013. There, she met her groom, after spending her first year at Spelman College in Atlanta.

The couple got wed before a group of 50 friends and family, which included many of Rapalalani’s fellow classmates from the Winfrey Academy.

Immediately the reverend pronounced the couple as husband and wife, Winfrey reportedly cheered, “Africans in the house!”

And without doubt, she got the party started.
